Lavender can be very effective on repelling moths. First you need to clean the area where moths have been to get rid of them. Lavender will not kill or remove moths.

It is not the adult moths that damage clothes, but the larvae (tiny, white worms) that is from the moth’s eggs. In fact the adults do not eat nor live long. An adult female can lay between 100 and 150 eggs. The eggs hatch in about five days and it is all down hill from there for clothes or yarn. The larvae commence eating the fabric/fibers. The larvae will continue eating until they enter the cocoon stage.

Lavender and cedar (even moth balls) do not actually kill the moths, their eggs, or the larvae. They mask the male’s ability to smell female pheromones, therefore the males can not locate the females to mate and thus the female do not lay eggs.

Before using lavender and/or cedar you need to get rid of any eggs, larvae, or cocoons in your yarn, fabric, or other fibers.

Wipe down all storage bins or drawers where the items are located with a wet cloth or sponge. Locate the eggs and/or larvae and get rid of them. Try shaking the items out. If it is the summer, try putting them outside in direct sun light, which may either kill or drive away the eggs and larvae.

Our Moth-Away Closet Sachets contain a mixture of lavender and cedar.

We suggest using one sachet every 5 feet or so to insure that the fragrance of lavender/cedar is strong enough to smell.

If the fragrance fades just give the sachet a squeeze to release the natural oil inside of the lavender buds. Replace the sachet whenever you no longer smell the fragrance of lavender even after giving it a squeeze. Lavender has a shelf live of approximately two years.

Limauge Boutique sells bulk, dried lavender buds and bunches imported from France as well as Moth Away closet sachets, regular lavender sachets, party and wedding favors, lavender soap, lavender lemonade, and much more.

A lot of websites today, especially those with shopping carts, are made up of Dynamic web pages. A dynamic webpage is one that is driven by a database. Most of the information on a dynamic web page does not appear until a person accesses that page. The database then brings up what the person is looking for.

This is a good thing for online shopping but not so good if you are looking for good search engine results. Search engines usually cannot access the information or data on a dynamic page to index it because it changes all of the time.

Add some Static web pages to your website.

A static web page is one where the information is permanent and does not come from a database. Therefore, the search engine can index it and it will show up on search engine results.

How to tell the difference between a dynamic and static webpage?

Look at the end of the webpage address.

A dynamic page will usually end in .php, .asp, .aspx or have a Session ID at the end of the address.

Example: http://www.limaugeboutique.com/categories.php

A static page will usually end in either .htm or .html

What is lavender and why would I want to use it you say - well, read on. . .

Lavender or Lavandula is a flowering, annual in some cases (must be planted every year) or most likely a perennial (comes back year after year), and is part of the mint family. It is native to the Mediterranean region. There are many cultivars and varieties. You can find a variety that will grow in just about any area of the country but some do better than others (more about growing lavender later).

Quoted From Wikipedia - this just about says it all

"Lavenders are widely grown in gardens. Flower spikes are used for dried flower arrangements. The fragrant, pale purple flowers and flower buds are used in potpourris. Dried and sealed in pouches, they are placed among stored items of clothing to give a fresh fragrance and as a deterrent to moths. The plant is also grown commercially for extraction of lavender oil from the flowers. This oil is used as an antiseptic and for aromatherapy."

Lavender flowers yield abundant nectar which yields a high quality honey for beekeepers. Lavender monofloral honey is produced primarily in the nations around the Mediterranean, and marketed worldwide as a premium product. Lavender flowers can be candied and are used as cake decoration. Lavender is also used as a herb, either alone or as an ingredient of herbes de Provence. Lavender is also used to flavour sugar, the product being called "lavender sugar", and the flowers are sometimes sold in a blend with black tea, as "lavender tea".

French chefs in and around Provence, France have been incorporating this herb into their cuisine for many centuries. Lavender lends a floral, slightly sweet and elegant flavour to most dishes. For most cooking applications it is the dried buds (also referred to as flowers) of lavender that are utilised, though some chefs experiment with the leaves as well. It is the buds however that contain the essential oil of lavender, which is where both the scent and flavour of lavender are best derived.

English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, yields a highly effective essential oil with very sweet overtones, and can be used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications.

Essential oil of lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It was used in hospitals during WWI to disinfect floors, walls and other surfaces.

An infusion of lavender is claimed to soothe and heal insect bites. Bunches of lavender are also said to ward off insects. If applied to the temples, lavender oil is said to soothe headaches. Lavender is frequently used as an aid to sleep and relaxation: Seeds and flowers of the plant are added to pillows, and an infusion of three flowerheads added to a cup of boiling water are recommended as a soothing and relaxing bedtime drink.

Lavender oil (or extract of Lavender) is claimed to heal acne when used diluted 1:10 with water, rosewater, or witch hazel; it is also used in the treatment of skin burns and inflammatory conditions (it is a traditional treatment for these in Iran)."

So, you see, lavender is a very versatile herb that can be used in the garden for beauty, in craft projects, ointments, soaps, cooking, for weddings in favors and as an alternative for the traditional rice toss, and just to enjoy for it intoxicating aroma.

Lavender Mini Bouquets are very popular for weddings and other parties. We even had customers use them as a giveaway when a client purchased a gift certificate. You can use them at the wedding reception, as a wedding favor, or bridal favor too. Here are instructions so you can make them yourself.

Supplies Needed:

  • dried Lavender stems
  • green floral tape (to match stem color)
  • ribbon (satin or organza - we are using 3/4" wide in our photos)
  • utility scissors
  • fabric/ribbon scissors
  • ruler
  • customized tag or business card (optional)

Instructions:

Click on a picture to view it larger.

Gather your supplies together (see list above)

Pull out 10 to 20 good, straight stems from the bunch and strip excess buds. You only want about an 1" of buds at the top of the stem.

Arrange the stems into a nicely shaped bouquet.

Start floral tape at the top of the bunch, just at the base of the last set of buds.

Roll the floral tape down the stems about 1-1/2" as you turn the bouquet.

Roll the floral tape back up the stems as you turn the bouquet. Press the tape at the top with your fingers and cut off excess.

Lay the bunch next to a ruler and measure 6" from top of bunch to bottom.

Using utility scissors cut the stems off at 6".

Lay the ribbon next to the ruler and measure out 7-3/4".

Cut the ribbon straight across at 7-3/4".

Place the ribbon as shown in the picture above, overlapping right over left.

Take right edge of ribbon and push under left making sure not to twist the ribbon. Pull tight and press ribbon flat down with your fingers.

If you want to add a tag use a 1/8" hole punch and put a hole at the top left of the tag. Feed the ribbon through the hole making sure not to twist it.

Space the tag in the center of the ribbon. Tie the ribbon onto the bouquet as shown above making sure tag is on top.

With fabric scissors cut the edges of the ribbon off at an angle.

The finished lavender bouquet! It looks so elegant on a fancy china plate.

There are certain things your website needs to be successful. While some features are super important others are optional or my personal perference. I will explain as I go.

What key features or pages should your business website have?

  • About Us
  • Contact information
  • Telephone number
  • Hours of Operation
  • Search
About Us:

Too many business websites are impersonal. This page gives the visitor some information about you and/or your business. You don't need to get too personal. You could share how or why you started your business, your goals for your business, or what your main product line includes.

People like to connect with a real person and I think this page gives them piece of mind that you are indeed a "real" business and they would be dealing with a "real" person.

Contact Information:

Believe it or not, many websites forget to include a way for the visitor to contact them. You should include this information, whether just an email address or physical address and email, on ALL pages. You never know how someone is getting to your website. They could be coming in "through the back door" meaning they don't come to your website through your index page and if they never visit your index page they still need a way of contacting you.

Telephone Number:

If you want visitors to contact you by phone this should be easily visible on all pages as well. I suggest putting it at the top of the page. Take a look at either of our websites and you will see the phone number big and bold at the top right.

wholesale.limaugeboutique.com

For Contact and Telephone information, never make the visitor search for this information. It should be easily visible on all pages.

Hours of Operation:

Whether you have a physical store or work from your home you should set hours of operation. If you don't then people will be calling you at 10 pm on a Sunday (yes it has happened to us). If you work at home and the phone rings after your hours of operation you should discipline yourself not to answer the phone. Also, don't assume that the visitor to your website lives in the same timezone as you do. Include the abbreviated timezone next to your hours of operation as well.

Here is a list of Abbreviations for timezones:

http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/

Search:

If you don't have a way for your visitor to search on your website you just might lose their business. I visited a website just yesterday looking for fabric and while their website was very well organized they had no way of searching for fabric. They probably have over 2,000 pieces of fabric on their website. Without a search I would have to look at every category and at every piece of fabric until I found what I wanted. Unless someone really wants your product that bad they will just move on to the next website if they can't search.

If your web host or shopping cart software does not include a search feature then add this free search feature to your website. You will need knowledge of copying and pasting html code into your website. I have used it on many websites I have designed and it blends in nicely.

A lavender sachet can be a small pillow or bag and it is filled with fragrant dried lavender buds. They can be used to keep linens fresh, or in any room in the house to give light scent of lavender.

The fresh lavender scent will last a long time, but if it should start to fade but give the buds a squeeze and it will release the natural oil inside and release more fragrance.

Lavender is a very calming scent and one that seems to span the generations. Unlike roses which tend to remind you of Grandma's house, lavender is a unique and even seductive scent.

About Fingers & Toes: Modern Baby Designs

Fingers & Toes brings you simple, modern, and creative designs. On our Blog we talk about new products in our line, give ways of using our products in projects and recipes, share a little bit about our hobbies and interests, and also share some website optimization and search engine ranking tips to help you grow your online business.

I do suggest that you keep the personal info to a minimum. When you start getting into opinions about politics, religion, lifestyle choices, etc. you move away from having a busines Blog and risk alienating your customers.

Remember, your customers come to you for a product or service. They do not really want to know your opinion about life and current events.

Keep it professional!

A blog can be a personal diary, a daily rant, a political soapbox, a collection of links, writings about your personal thoughts, or in the case of a business, a way to drive traffic to your business website.

Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them out there and there are no real rules. Best of all - it is FREE!

A blog is basically a place, similar to a website, where you write free stuff on an ongoing basis. New posts show up at the top of the first page so your visitors can read what's new. They can leave a Comment on a post or link to it or email you or just read it and move on. As you write more posts they drop off from the front or homepage and go to secondary pages. A visitor would have to search or find them through a category link.

For a business owner it is important to not only have a website to showcase your products and/or service but I do suggest having a blog, if you have time, just to draw more traffic to your main website.

If something is free and can benefit your business you should definitely take advantage of it.

Here are some websites that let you setup a Blog for free.

www.blogger.com/ (suggested for the newbie blogger)
www.wordpress.com/
www.livejournal.com/
