  • Soap base or soap scraps
  • lavender essential oil
  • dried lavander buds, chopped or crushed
  • rolled oats
  • wax paper

Instructions:

Soak the soap scraps in a medium-size bowl with just enough water to soften them.

Add a few drops of lavendar essential oil.

Add a small amount of rolled oats and some dried lavender buds.

Mix everything with your hands and re-shape the mixture into a soap ball.

Place your soap ball, or balls if you have enough to make more, on a cookie sheet that has been lined with wax paper to dry.

If you want your soap ball(s) to dry faster you can put the cookie sheet in a heated over. Preheat your oven to 200° and then turn it off. Then place the cookie sheet inside.

For a smoother soap ball(s) you can omit the rolled oats and dried lavander buds.

His Aunt Jobiska made him drink
Lavender water tinged with pink,
For she said, 'The world in general knows
There's nothing so good for a Pobble's toes!'
~
Edward Lear, Laughable Lyrics. The Pobble Who Has No Toes.

Here's flowers for you;
Hot lavender, mints, savory, marjoram;
The marigold, that goes to bed wi' the sun,
And with him rises weeping.
~
Shakespeare, The Winter's Tale

The scent of true lavender can remove mustiness, improve concentration and help you to relax. Here are some suggestions for using lavender to scent a room.

~ place a bowl of dried lavender buds or dried lavender stems by the window so when the sun beats down on them it will draw out the natural oil inside

~ put a drop of lavender essential oil on a light bulb in your lamp. When you turn on the light the heat from the bulb will evaporate the oil and fill the room with lavender scent.

~ throw some dried lavender stems, a dried lavender bunch, or dried lavender buds on the fire in your fireplace. This doesn't work so well on a fire outside because the scent escapes in the open air. It needs to be done in a closed room with a fireplace.

~ add lavender buds to a pan of water and keep it simmering on the stove

Supplies Needed:

  • An old tea kettle (as large as you can get)
  • 1/4 lb. (approximately 3 to 4 cups) of dried lavender buds
  • 12-inch piece of rubber tubing
  • Large Glass jar (mason jar works)
Note: You should be able to get the rubber tubing from your local Lowe's or Home Depot. It needs to be flexible and have an opening wide enough of the liquid to escape without clogging up.

You can get an old tea kettle on eBay or at your local thrift shop.

Instructions:

1. Fill an old tea kettle with 1/4 lb. (3 or 4 cups) of dried lavender buds. If that is too much lavender buds for your tea kettle just use what will fit about 3/4 of the way up. The reason you want to use an old tea kettle and not a new tea kettle is that the strong lavender fragrance will linger and it won't be usable if you want to just boil water again.

2. Place one end of the rubber tubing in the spout of the tea kettle and the other end in the glass jar.

3. Fill the tea kettle the rest of the way up with water. Allow a little space at the top so it won't overflow when you heat the water.

4. Bring the water to a boil. Watch it so it doesn't overflow.

Glass Jar for distilling lavender water5. Once the water is at a boil reduce to simmer. The steam will will be caught in the glass jar.

The oil will evaporate and leave a fragrant oil and water mixture that you can then bottle and sell or use as gifts for family and friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 oz.) soft breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion, chopped finely
  • 1 teaspoon lavender buds, chopped or crushed finely
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary, finely chopped
To chop the lavender buds, leave them out in the air to dry a bit. Then put them in a mortar and using the pestle crush them. If you do not have a mortar and pestle you can put them in a Ziploc bag and use a rolling pin over the bag until they are crushed.

Mix all ingredients together and then stuff into your turkey or chicken to cook. Or, place in a casserole dish and bake at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes until the top is brown.
